Learning Orchestration System (LOS)

The Profound Learning Research Institute, along with its partners, are developing the next generation fully integrated web-based Learning Orchestration System. This system supports the creation of individualized learning roadmaps and itineraries that can be tracked in real-time by the teacher. This breakthrough LOS also orchestrates the engagement of students in learning experiences that align with the Profound Learning™ model and support the development of their Future Ready skills.

A Blended Approach: LOS not LMS

PLi supports a blended approach to learning, meaning that student learning has a blend of interactions with the teacher, other students, community members as well as technology. The LOS system approaches learning from a vastly different perspective than traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS), which are primarily about delivery of content and assessment using technology. PLi's philosophy is to create rich and engaging learning experiences. The LOS is used to orchestrate processes within the learning experiences where students access different kinds of learning content, either from within or outside the system. PLi's approach is to create learning experiences that can be personalized to the individual learner.

Profound Learning is about releasing JOY for both students and teachers. JOY is released when students engage in learning experiences that are meaningful and are personalized to their learning style. JOY for teachers is released when students are enabled to be autonomous in their learning experiences and their planning time is reduced due to a streamlined system. Our LOS guides teachers when designing learning experiences by providing design tools that incorporate key elements of JW Wilson's Learning Code and the 12 Essential Future Ready skills. These strategically designed experiences will result in greater student JOY, relevance and a higher retention level of learning.

Journey Map

The student journey map lays the foundation on which all of the other LOS components derive their meaning. The journey map is the entire learning journey of the student usually found in the provincial/state or national curriculum. The curriculum is reduced to the essential learning elements which are entered into the journey map by grade, subject, unit and strand.

As students progress along their continuum of learning, the journey map is updated on a continuous basis upon successful completion of learning experiences.

Capacity Map

The student capacity map is a subset of the journey map that reflects where they are within their learning journey. Students will self assess the depth of their learning using a metacognition scale moving through "Information" to "Knowledge" to "Know How" and to "Wisdom". Instructors and students will create learning experiences that ensure coverage of the essential learning shown on the capacity map. Upon successful completion of the learning experiences that were assigned to a capacity map, the students progress to their next learning experience where a new capacity map has been generated.

Learning Experiences

The role of the teacher is to design a sequence of learning experiences that will cover the essential learning of a capacity map to a deep level of cognition.

Learning experiences may take the form of:

  1. Excursion – a short learning event; direct instruction, short assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.
  2. Expedition – a rich project-based learning experience that usually is spread over many days or weeks and may involve students working in groups
  3. Quest – a Design Based Learning (DBL) project that is also spread over several days or weeks but is more open-ended, meaning that the final work product is not known. DBL projects are framed around the creative process and use formative assessment as the primary means of evaluation.

Itinerary and Assessment

The itinerary guides the learning experience. Each learning experience is accompanied by a unique itinerary. The itinerary for an expedition, for example, may have multiple steps, activities and tasks. Each task may have a quality benchmark attached that defines the quality of work expected. During the design phase of the learning experience, the teacher can decide whether or not validation of the completed task is needed before moving on to the next task.

The learning experience will also have a recommended timeline or target date for completion of the project at a quality standard. Students can request more time (time is flexible) in order to meet quality benchmarks (quality is rigid) with no assessment penalty. Students failing to meet all quality benchmarks may be requested to rework their project.

In this system, assessment is derived from the completion of quality work. Meeting a quality benchmark is simply a 'yes' or '1'. Failure to meet a quality benchmark results in a 'not yet' or '0'. If a project has ten tasks and the student completes nine of the ten at a quality standard then the student's mark will appear as 90%. Once all ten tasks are at the quality standard, the student receives 100%.

Profound Learning is not self-paced learning. It is about making time flexible and keeping quality rigid. Teachers create an overall year plan with a series of learning experiences and capacity maps, which allow students to navigate through the curriculum with a high degree of ownership or autonomy. The capacity map directs student learning and is a reflective tool to make explicit the progression of learning and the cognition level at which the learning is taking place. In contrast to self-paced learning where the goal often is the completion of a course of study, the Profound Learning model focuses on creating learning experiences that ignite the intrinsic motivation of the student not only to learn, but to produce a very high quality of work.

The Learning Experience Exchange

The LOS enables teachers to create rich learning experiences that can be "packaged" and shared or sold through the PLi Learning Experience Exchange or "App" Store. Teacher's will be able to deposit and acquire learning experiences, modify them and disseminate them to their student's capacity maps.

PLi is developing a global journey map that will enable sharing of learning experiences between teachers from around the world. State and national curriculums will map into this global journey map.


Neuroscience and The Advanced Learning Institute

JW Wilson is the Executive Director of The Advanced Learning Institute, an organization which researches, develops and implements science-based learning programs. Mr. Wilson is also the author of the soon to be published book "Cracking the Learning Code", the culmination of over twenty-five years of scientific research into the basis for how to accelerate the speed of learning and the rate of behavioural change.

The key finding of this research is that in each of us there is a genetically implanted Learning Code, which must be switched on before we can create long-term memory or lasting behavioural change. The research that lead to the discovery of the Learning Code has been derived from the fields of neuroscience, genetics, molecular biology, quantum physics, complexity science and chaos theory. The results have yielded groundbreaking, new information on how we learn and change behaviour. JW's passion, in fact his crusade, is to bring this essential knowledge to the world. The innovative Learning Code research is now being used by organizations including the country's largest employer organization, and the group that implements leadership training for NASA.

At PLi, we have integrated 24 elements from the Learning Code into our Profound Learning Model. As a member of PLi's Profound Learning Research Institute, JW Wilson provides valuable insight that helps us to refine our professional practices and take into account the latest discoveries on how the brain works.

This is because we now live in a world where information is doubling at the phenomenal rate of once every 18 months. Therefore to lead a successful life, the ability and desire to learn new knowledge have become the primary assets that one can possess.

Neuroscience Creates More Fulfilling, Efficient and Joyful, Classrooms

In this video, not only are the students directing their own learning and having a blast doing it, but the teachers are enjoying the educational process so much more because it is so greatly fulfilling to them. This is because the teacher's role now shifts from being a mechanistic deliverer of information to becoming a trusted mentor, who helps the student develop a powerful sense of self and competency in the subjects covered.

In the school represented in this video, 80% of the students are achieving excellence (the highest level of standing), compared to 20% excellence in the rest of the province. This is a dramatic 4xs difference. The neuroscience approach is clearly making a profound impact.

*Please note while these students went on a discovery trip to real roller coasters. The same neurological structures of discovery can be activated in other less expensive ways. Professional Development and Seminars

At the core of the PLi transformation strategy is professional development. The PLi team brings decades of experience of training over 40,000 teachers and administrators around the world. PLi recognizes the need to provide both live hands on training seminars along with online just-in-time learning.

Teachers and administrators are encouraged to become members of the Association for Profound Learning which includes comprehensive online training using the GEENIUS LOS. Just as the LOS is able to orchestrate customized learning for students similarly the LOS can be used to customize the professional development of teachers.

The GEENIUS LOS provides a powerful tool for administrators to bring alignment of professional practice within schools and districts while reducing stress and fear and increasing JOY.

Profound Transformation Workshop (PTW)

The PLi team has years of experience in working with educators and administrators in system redesign and transformation. Over the years PLi has developed processes around "Profound Transformation" that enable large groups of educators to be involved in design experiences that result in Organizational Brilliance that can only come from these kinds of experiences.

Typically a PLi Profound Transformation Workshop takes 2-4 days and involves anywhere from 20-50 participants. The work product that emerges from a PTW will not only articulate a clear implementation strategy for a district or school but will have a high level by-in by the participants of the PTW.

The i.d. School program is a unique high school program with the aim to bring together the disciplines of human learning (Art, Science, and Humanities) through the thread of core principles of individual creativity, design-thinking, innovation, and social enterprise. The i.d. School aims to educate not only artists who are adept in the integration of science and humanities, but also scientists, researchers, activists, futurists, economists, entrepreneurs, politicians, doctors, and lawyers who are trained in the application of design-thinking, systems understanding, and rigorous innovation methods to their particular vocations and professional places in their world.
